Solitary duckbill eel
The solitary duckbill eel〔(Common names of ''Nettastoma solitarium'' ) at www.fishbase.org.〕 (''Nettastoma solitarium'') is an eel in the family Nettastomatidae (duckbill/witch eels).〔(''Nettastoma solitarium'' ) at www.fishbase.org.〕 It was described by Castle and Smith in 1981.〔Smith, D. G., J. E. Böhlke and P. H. J. Castle 1981 (20 July) (6158 ) ''A revision of the nettastomatid eel genera Nettastoma and Nettenchelys (Pisces: Anguilliformes), with descriptions of six new species.'' Proceedings of the Biological Society of Washington v. 94 (no. 2): 533-560.〕 It is a marine, deep water-dwelling eel which is known from the Indo-Western Pacific, including Kyushu-Palau Ridge, the Philippines, Australia, and the Hawaiian Islands. It is known to dwell at a depth range of . Males can reach a maximum total length of .〔
The species epithet "''solitarium''", meaning "solitary" in Latin, refers to the species' wide and isolated distribution in the Pacific.〔
